Received in my office: “Dear Ministers, Thank you for teaching us by example how we can give our gifts to God and Jesus, like the Magi did. We look forward to seeing you every week. From, the fifth grade Sunday School class.”
I said many times at our Charge Conference this week, we are the future our founders dreamed of, and we dream of a “future with hope” (Jeremiah 29:11). This note in a child’s scrawl is among hundreds of signs that how we worship, learn and serve blesses each other, our children and the world. The picture below is another. We have significantly expanded our relationship with Sims Elementary and on Monday morning, J’Nevelyn Lloyd and a team of parents and children carried gifts (like the Magi) to share God’s light and love.
We also learned this week that TUMC is the only large Methodist church in the Capital District that has grown in worship attendance the last 5 years. I have no doubt it is your example of giving gifts that makes this possible. You understand “blessed to be a blessing” (Genesis 12). TUMC receives anywhere from 23-28% of annual income in December, relying year after year on the season’s generosity of members and friends. The last four years we have taken in more income than we have spent in expenses.
Our stretch this year is the largest anyone around the finance table can remember to fully fund 2016 mission and ministry. I not only believe our congregation can do this, I have seen it with my own eyes. May God bless you in joyful and meaningful giving to support the church you love.
I’ll see you on Sunday,
