TUMC and Habitat for Humanity have been building houses together for over fifteen years because we believe everyone in Austin deserves a decent place to live.
This spring TUMC and United Methodists from all over Austin are working together with Habitat for Humanity to build a home for a Bastrop family in need. Want to help build a house for Tina and her son? There are two more build dates you can sign up for:
Tina has deep roots in Texas.
Her ancestors have lived in the Austin and Bastrop area for over one hundred years. Currently Tina and her son, Cordero, share a one-bedroom duplex in South Austin. Tina doesn’t complain about sleeping on the recliner while her son sleeps in the bedroom because it’s all they can afford on her fixed disability income. Cordero is 21 years old and also has special needs, and Tina does what she can to support him.
With the help of Austin Habitat for Humanity, Tina has the opportunity to become a first-time homeowner. Her late husband, an army veteran, planned to participate in Austin Habitat’s program before he passed away. Tina’s favorite part of the Habitat program is the people. She says, “It’s hard being disabled and not being able to do things like construction,” but she appreciates the Habitat staff who work with her so she can be a successful homeowner. Tina is most excited for the freedom that comes with owning a home and is also looking forward to having a yard so her dog can run freely.
Tina and Cordero want to extend their heartfelt gratitude to everyone who is helping build their home. Thank you for your support in building strength, stability, and self-reliance for their family!
