We are delighted to share Bishop Schnase’s intention to appoint Rev. Patty Bergfield to TUMC as a part-time Associate Pastor in the Rio Texas Annual Conference.
Pastor Patty is an Elder in Full Connection in the Texas Annual Conference and has most recently served as a Transitional Intentional Interim Ministry Specialist. Pastor Patty has served as Pastor at Shepherd UMC and Highlands UMC and as Associate Pastor at Tomball UMC and Cypress UMC. She has participated in mission trips to Costa Rica, Guatemala, and numerous U. M. ARMY camps. She is very excited to be joining the ministry team at TUMC and is looking forward to becoming part of this wonderful church family.
Pastor Patty was born in Ft. Worth, Texas, and attended The University of Texas at Austin where she earned a BBA in marketing. She met her husband Jeff at UT and they married shortly after graduation. Pastor Patty later earned a Master of Divinity at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, KY. She completed training as a Transitional Intentional Interim Ministry Specialist and received her certification in 2014. Pastor Patty has three children, two of whom reside in Austin, and one resides in Ft. Worth. Her first grandchild, Chloe Rose, also lives in Austin and her daughter is expecting her second child in November. Jeff and Patty were married 37 years when Jeff unexpectedly passed away in March 2017. Pastor Patty loves to travel and her recent trips have taken her to Europe, Peru and Israel. She enjoys sewing, quilting and beading. Pastor Patty also plays golf and readily admits she is not very good. She categorizes herself as a happy golfer.
Pastor Patty’s favorite Scripture passage is Matthew 22:34-40 (also found in Mark 12:28-34 and Luke 10:27) which declares the first commandment as loving God first with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and the second commandment as loving others as yourself. In these passages, Jesus states that all the law and prophets are grounded in these commandments. Pastor Patty desires for all people to love God first, to love others as themselves, and to love themselves as God loves them. She believes these are best accomplished in relationship with God through prayer. Pastor Patty is honored to walk alongside people in their journey of faith through all seasons of life.
One of Pastor Patty’s great passions in ministry is prayer. She has written her own Bible study on prayer which she has taught in every church to which she was appointed and also at day retreats in other churches. Pastor Patty desires people to understand prayer so that their relationship with God will be deep and transformational. Her lessons on prayer are designed to help an individual as well as communities of faith connect with God in such a way that they will become who God designed them to be to fulfill the purpose of God’s will. Pastor Patty has also written lessons on understanding people of other religions so that Christians will be able to love them to Christ with dignity and respect. She loves to dig deep into God’s Word following John Wesley’s approach of experience, tradition and reason. Pastor Patty is looking forward to exploring God’s Word with you.
