It is with great joy that we share Bishop Schnase’s intention to appoint Rev. Lance Richards as the next Senior Pastor of Tarrytown United Methodist Church at Annual Conference this June.
Lance comes to us from his current appointment in the Texas Annual Conference as the Lead Pastor of The Watershed United Methodist Church in League City, Texas. He began in ministry at A&M United Methodist Church in College Station, Texas, and held his first ministry position as Director of College Ministries. He has previously been the Senior Pastor at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church and Macon United Methodist Church in the North Carolina Annual Conference and Lexington United Methodist Church and Blue United Methodist Church in the Texas Annual Conference.
Pastor Lance has held numerous leadership positions in the Texas Annual Conference including the Core Leadership Team, the West and South District Leadership Teams, Senior High District Camp Co-Director, Certified Candidacy Mentor, the Missional Excellence Strategic Realignment Task Force, and coaching for the Vibrant Church Initiative. He helped found Laity Unleashed, an innovative initiative to help laity discover where their faith and passion intersect with the world’s deepest needs in order to discern areas of significant impact. He is a trained church planter and second pastor and helped to re-launch Central United Methodist Church in Galveston, Texas while serving at The Watershed. He was chosen by the Cabinet to receive the Eric Anderson Award at the Texas Annual Conference in 2013 which is an award given to a young clergy person for significant service. He just completed a five year cohort in the Advancing Pastoral Leadership program last fall.
Lance received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Science with a minor in Business Administration from Texas A&M University and is a certified teacher in the state of Texas. He received a Master of Science from Texas A&M University in Agricultural Education, specializing in Adult Education and Educational Technology. He received a Master of Divinity from Duke Divinity School in Durham, North Carolina. Pastor Lance is an ordained Elder in the Texas Annual Conference.
Rachel and Lance are the proud parents of Nathaniel (5) and Gabriel (2). Rachel is an Austin native and graduated from Westwood High School, and her parents and sister and brother-in-law still live in the Austin area. She graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies and is certified to teach 4th–8th grade math and science. Rachel also received a Master of Arts from The University of Texas in Counseling Psychology and is a certified School Counselor. She currently devotes her time to raising their two boys and is the founder and President of League City Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) as well as the President of the Clergy Spouse Association in the Texas Annual Conference.
Both Lance and Rachel love music. Rachel plays classical guitar and bass and has a beautiful alto voice. Pastor Lance plays drums, guitar, piano, and saxophone and enjoys singing. He also spent over a decade as a DJ and appreciates a variety of music.
Pastor Lance is excited to begin his ministry at Tarrytown United Methodist Church. We will have more details to share about the transition in the days ahead, but in the meantime, we look forward to welcoming Pastor Lance and his family in July.
