At Tarrytown United Methodist Church (TUMC), we offer you a number of opportunities to serve God and experience God’s grace through the joy of music. Learn more about the different opportunities below.
The primary purpose of the Chancel Choir is to provide choral leadership at the 11:00 am Sanctuary Worship Service. The TUMC choir comprises singers of various vocal abilities who enjoy singing as well as those who have had advanced training in voice. Membership requires a desire to grow musically and spiritually, as well as a commitment to be present at rehearsals and Sunday worship services. Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings at 7:30 pm in the Choir Room.
The Chancel Choir presents larger works or groups of anthems twice a year (or more), often accompanied by instrumentalists from the Austin Symphony Orchestra or The University of Texas. In addition to hymn festivals and Lessons and Carol services, major works are presented during morning worship services. Recent presentations are Vivaldi ‘s Gloria, anthems by Howard Helvey for choir and piano, and Memorial Day music selections for choir and brass.
The Chancel Ensemble is a sub-set of the Chancel Choir which provides musical leadership for the 9:30 am Sanctuary Worship Service. Rehearsals are scheduled for special Chamber Ensembles. Bach’s Cantatas 79 and 104 have been sung by this group as well as other music from the sacred choral repertoire.
S.O.S. Children’s Choir
Singing Our Song (or S.O.S. for short) is TUMC’s seasonal children’s choir that meets throughout the year. Children ages 3yrs – 5th grade are welcome to join (children are divided into groups based on their grade). We sing in worship and in special services or pageants throughout the year including a Christmas pageant every December.
Youth Music Ministry
The mission of the TUMC Youth Music Ministry is to provide opportunities for our youth to develop and share their musical gifts in ways that honor and glorify God, to build community through fellowship with their peers and to strengthen relationships with God:
- We believe that music is a gift and, like all gifts, comes from God.
- We believe that God desires for us to use and share the gifts we have been given to honor God.
- We believe that music is a powerful tool in developing individual capabilities, community cohesiveness, spiritual growth, and a personal relationship with God.
There are opportunities to sing in the youth choir, play or sing in the youth band, play an instrument during worship, and more!
